Meconet’s emission reduction efforts proceed as planned. In recent years, we have taken significant steps to reduce emissions resulting from our own operations, and the work currently continues with greater emphasis on new solutions, energy efficiency, and the development of the entire value chain.
We have switched to green electricity in all our units, which has been one of the most significant steps towards reducing emissions related to our own operations. At the same time, new variables have been added to the general formula, such as acquisition of Relicomp for the Meconet Group. Regardless of the change, we are still moving forward in line with our goals.
We keep up good pace. The transition to green electricity has been a major development, and now we are looking more and more extensively into new opportunities for influencing emissions in our production and use of energy.
External verification strengthens the reliability of emission calculations
This year, we are taking another important step in developing emissions calculations. During the summer, third-party verification of emissions calculations will be carried out for the first time, covering scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions.
If an external party verifies our emissions calculations, this serves as proof beyond our own estimations. The data will become significantly more credible for our stakeholders.
External verification strengthens the reliability of calculations and brings more transparency to both our current and potential customers. Furthermore, it facilitates responding to the customers’ increasing sustainability demands more convincingly.
We have already been awarded the bronze EcoVadis certificate. EcoVadis is the world’s largest provider of corporate sustainability ratings with more than 100,000 rated companies.
Energy efficiency and new opportunities
Our further emission reduction measures require assessment with even greater care. After implementation of the most significant and obvious measures, attention is turned to areas such as heating, energy recovery, energy storage, and auxiliary materials used in production processes.
We are currently conducting energy efficiency surveys, based on which various options will be weighed. For example, solutions related to heat production, heat recovery, and energy peak balancing are rapidly developing. Innovations are constantly introduced to the market; their compatibility with our own production requires careful assessment.
The technology in this field is developing by leaps and bounds. Even though it is not our intention to promise too much too soon, we are constantly exploring new options and weighing solutions for best compliance with our operations.
Scope 3 emphasizes the importance of co-operation
Like many companies in the metal industry, Meconet also generates the bulk of its total emissions in the value chain – i.e., scope 3 emissions. The share of steel is particularly significant.
In this work, co-operation with the customers is pivotal. Meconet can offer customers options that allow affecting emissions in the value chain as well. Among them is low-carbon steel, which can be utilised according to the customer needs. Low-emission alternatives are also being developed in logistics, and several partners are moving towards lower-carbon transportation solutions.
We have the opportunity to offer our customers low-carbon steel and explore logistics options that can affect scope 3 emissions. In case of such solutions, co-operation with customers and partners is paramount.
Responsibility work is about continuous development
Emission reduction work is not a one-off project, but continuous development. For Meconet, this means progress that is realistic, long-term, and based on open data. The objective is to find solutions that are both responsible and sustainable from the business perspective.
Year by year, responsibility requirements are expressed more clearly in our customers’ questions, tenders and partnerships. Because of this, besides benefiting the environment, emission reduction efforts constitute part of our competitive ability.
We have been on the right track for years. The work continues one step at a time – mapping new opportunities, strengthening data, and building more effective solutions in co-operation with our customers.
